Is your company a social scaler? Do you want it to be? This MIT Sloan article shares what companies can learn from social scalers. In case you were wondering, “social scalers are companies that focus on market-based solutions that do not consume the scarce resources of donors and government agencies. Their goal: transform social problems into business opportunities on a national or even global scale.”

Impact

Studies show that leaders who undergo significant vertical learning are far more likely to generate the organizational transformation required for high-impact, large-scale Conscious Capitalism. Check out this MetaIntegral Associates white paper on vertical learning and how it can help shape conscious leaders who create conscious businesses.

CCSD friend and supporter, Shannon McCrary, gave a shout out to our organization and launch this week in the San Diego Business Journal. McCrary dives even deeper on why it makes business sense to be committed to something greater than just profits in her article, Consumers Demand Purpose-Driven Capitalism. 

Impact

Sustainable Brands New Metrics annual conference was held this week. Each year they focus on identifying, measuring, and quantifying new forms of business risk and value by tying environmental an social impact to financials. Check out some of the leading ideas and practices shared this week with hundreds of top execs across a variety of industries.

Most of us are aware of Zappos and maybe have even bought a thing or two from them. But do you know how this company is able to generate $1 billion in gross merchandise sales every year? Hint: it rhymes with vulture (wish there was a better rhyming word). Check out CEO, Tony Hsieh’s book, Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, Purpose. Oh, and they even built another company around this.

In the news

You may or may not be aware that the U.N. backed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) officially launched last week. These are 17 global social, environmental, and economic goals to be reached by 2030. And of course they are quite ambitious. This article discusses why the SDGs are an opportunity companies can’t afford to ignore. 

Impact

Cities and urban areas will account for most of the world’s net population growth over the next two decades,with 1.4 million people being added to urban areas each week. This is the equivalent to the population of cities such as Leeds in the U.K. or San Diego in the U.S. “Businesses have a big role to play in helping their cities and communities become more conscious and sustainable throughout and after this influx.

Approximately 90% of Millennials want to use their skills for good. According to US 2014 Survey, they are willing to put their money were their mouth is. One in five Millennials say that among the top uses of their wealth is to change the world by finding solutions to major problems.

According to the DDI research report, Leaders in Transition, “… the business case for gender diversity has never been stronger…Companies in the bottom 20 percent of financial performance had only 19 percent women in leadership positions; companies in the top 20 percent have 37 percent female leadership.”
