In the news

Conscious Capitalism movement co-founder, Raj Sisodia, recently connected with Black Rock founder and CEO, Larry Fink. Fink recently sent out a letter to some of the largest company CEOs, calling for them to focus on value creation for all stakeholders and to have a larger purpose than making profits. This, as you can imagine caught a lot of support, and a lot of push back. During their time together, Raj learned that BlackRock not only talks the talk, but walks the walk. Read more about it HERE.

Impact

Education and tech entrepreneur, Andrew Yang, is calling for capitalism to get an upgrade. We’d agree. He asks and shares thoughts on how we can change capitalism to focus on what humans really want and need. A  “new type of capitalist economy that’s geared toward maximizing human well-being and fulfillment.”

Informative Watch

Watch and learn more about the Aravind Eye Care story.  Pavithra Mehta shares about her granduncle, Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy, and  how  he “integrated head, heart, and hands to light the eyes of millions of people around the world.” Her documentary on his journey, Infinite Vision, won the Best Documentary award at the New York Independent Film Festival in 2004. She also wrote a book about it. Video will be up until July 30th so don’t delay!

It can be a huge undertaking for an established, large, publicly traded company to create the change and culture they need to continue to thrive. Here is the story of PAR Technology Corporation’s journey and how Conscious Capitalism was their compass. “I am at a public company,” said Karen Sammon. “I respect the needs of all stakeholders, and together we will achieve the results we want.”

Informative Read

Inspiration

The Global Social Innovation Challenge finals took place last month. The social venture founders of Refugees Illuminated was one of the In-Kind Prize Winners receiving membership to CCSD. We are proud and honored to have these young, conscious leaders become members of our local chapter.

Paul Tudor Jones’ Just Capital company listing and metrics will be used to create a new Goldman Sachs Exchange Traded Fund. The metrics are something Mr. Jones has been working on since 2012 (the inspiration for this is in the article) . He, himself was “taken aback when he realized how a company’s stock performance correlated with how responsibly it behaved. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. The results were sufficiently profound to make him rethink his own business.”

Impact

Sometimes what you think is going on, or what you intend to happen, really isn’t what is actually occurring in your company. As a leader it is vital that your actions support your intentions. This is a lesson serial entrepreneur Pete Gombert learned during his third venture. And what inspired his fourth venture, GoodWell – a company dedicated to helping companies be aligned to their values.

The Washington Examiner published an article written by Young Voices executive director, Casey Given, titled “This group might restore capitalism’s good name.” He shared about his experience at the 2018 Conscious Capitalism conference last month.

Impact

Former Massachusetts Governor, Deval Patrick shared on stage at the Conscious Capitalism conference last month what it means to be a Conscious Capitalist. Fortune editor, Ellen McGirt shares the highlights of their conversation here.  This sums it up nicely – “It takes time to learn to see. We all will make serious mistakes. But making space for others to grow is one of the most important acts of kindness we can offer in this work. “The woke need to make room for the still waking,” he says, because we’re all still waking up to some degree. “We all need that grace.”

Over 850 people came together to discuss, share, learn, and grow around the shared purpose of expanding the positive impact business can support in the world. When we think of Lego, it often conjures up fun childhood memories, or the worst foot pain you’ve experienced. We likely don’t think of them as being a sustainable and innovative materials company. They are committed to changing that. Lego shared that they have started their first line of Lego elements created from sustainable, plant-based material. Their goal is to use sustainable material in core products and packaging by 2030. Now you can create lego plants from legos actually made from plants.

Impact

Is it possible to bring your whole heart to work? What impact could that have on you, your colleagues, your customers, and other stakeholders? This video is a great case on how a healthcare system turned their engagement and performance around by simply bringing their hearts to work.

Absolut Vodka says they have nothing to hide. Transparency is key to their quality and sustainability accountability. They want the world to know by sharing this clever new add. This is a great example of a company understanding that they have a bigger responsibility than just generating profits and that their profits depend on the limited resources they need to make their products.

Making goods less bad not only can have a great impact on our communities and environment, but also on our economic growth. “Research by Accenture found that the circular economy can unlock $4.5 trillion of economic growth,” say McDonough, father of Circular Economy. Learn more why and how here.

A quick yet powerful read from the folks at The School of Life. How to Reform Capitalism does not explicitly call this reformed capitalism, Conscious Capitalism, but their argument for this much needed shift is absolutely aligned.

Where we actually have exactly what we need because:
The opposite of love is not hate, it is fear

What will happen when one of the world’s most influential investment firms demands companies focus more on just profits? We will soon find out! Founder and Chief Executive of BlackRock, Laurence D. Fink, shared with the largest public companies, if they want support form them they will need to do more than focus on profits. They will also need to contribute to society.

“Society is demanding that companies, both public and private, serve a social purpose,” he wrote in a draft of the letter that was shared with me [NY Times]. “To prosper over time, every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society.”

Impact

It is the 5-year anniversary of the release of the Conscious Capitalism book that started the movement. Learn a little more about the history, impact, present, and a look ahead to what this means for business as usual. And how we are elevating humanity through business.
